The Nine Auspicious Nights of The Divine Mother...2

Now coming to the things that can be done in these 9 days, to the extent you can do, and everything is not essential; the most important requirement is just your faith, and you can worship the Divine Mother only with bare hands and a clean heart and a focused mind, just on Her! I have tried to put just the most minimal stuff...

1. Establish a Kalash if you can. The method is here:
http://hindupad.com/vratas-pujas/kalash-sthapana-or-ghat-sthapana-for-durga-pooja/

Read the following Kalash Prarthana, 3 times daily. If you can't establish the Kalash, just read the below Kalash Prarthana.

2. Alight a Deepak/Lamp with the  pure ghee of cow. Take care that it is big enough and it does NOT go off for 9 days. You must realize that it must be big enough such that it can hold good amount of ghee and you will have to refill it again and again. If it goes off, read the Saptshloki Durga 3 times and refill. Let it go off on its own on the 10th day.

3. Read the following in the Durga Saptshati:

http://sanskrit.safire.com/Sanskrit.html

a) Saptshloki Durga

b) 108 names of Durga Maa
c) Argala Srotram
d) Siddhkujikastotram
e) Khsama Prarthna

You can add the Kilak and the Devi Kavach also if you want to.

f) Read the chapters such that they will finish in 9 nights. Also, please read the comments section.

4. Meditate on the Divine Mother. This helps a lot. You must seek to establish connection with the Divine Mother. Also, you can practice tratak with the mother's photo.

If you have special desires in your life you can undertake the following:

1. During the day and night read the Saptshloki Durga and 108 names of Durga Maa 8 times or 24 times or even 108 times. This works, and works fast.

Please refer to the below pic for specific reason why you would wish to chant a mantra:

2. You can also chant the Laxmi Gayatri Mantra - 5*108 times or may be 11*108 times. Use a Tulsi mala.

3. If you want to pursue higher studies chant the above mantra 5*108 times or 11*108 times you can read the Saraswati Mantra mentioned above.

4. On the same lines you can chant a mantra for getting married. Note that the mantra is different for boys and girls!

If you are extremely desperate for something in your life, these 9 nights come in as a boon in your life. Desperation easily brings in tears in eyes and if your heart is pure and you have faith in Divine Mother's love, powers and help, cry before her. Cry with tears! There is a very good chance that you will get what you want.

What NOT to do during these 9 days/nights:

1. Avoid indulging in any sort of sensual pleasures during this time.

2. Don't plan a child conception during this time. Please read the following post:
http://oneastrovedic.blogspot.com/2012/07/child-birth1.html

3. This period is not meant for any celebrations/parties etc. Avoid them altogether.

Before I end, I must add this too - during these 9 days, you can carry out something special for your Ishta Dev too. I have explained about Ishta Dev in the below post:

  1. Hello Sir,
Thanks a lot for this informative post.
You have said that "Read the chapters such that they will finish in 9 nights." Could you please explain how should the chapters be divided for 9 nights? And what is the proper time of reading these chapters and mantras?

  2. Meghaji...Extremely sorry for a delayed reply. But actually that proved to be a blessing in disguise. One of esteemed person whom I know (Saindhaviji) gave me a solution to you question as follows:

1 - You can get it recited only once, followed by Chandi Homam, in which you can pour 108 ahutis for the Durga bija mantra. This can be done on any day, or once if you are doing it on the Ashtami day during Durga Puja.

2 - Or, you can get the entire text recited every day on all 9 days of Navaratri. On the 9th day, you can do homam as above.

3 - Or, you can get the entire text recited once, spread across the 9 days' period of Navaratri, completing a set number of chapters each day. There is a fixed number of how many chapters are to be read each day. On the 9th day, do homam. There are some sections that precede and follow the 13 chapters of Durga Saptashati. These are to be read on each of the 9 days, along with the rituals involved.

4 - Or, if you are doing it for a special wish fulfilment, there is a special way of reciting the 700 verses. In the beginning an end of each verse, another verse asking for the wish fulfilment is added. Thus, the entire recital involves 2100 verses. The wish fulfilment verses are listed in the coy of Durga Sapatshati itself. You can choose the verse that suits you the best in consultation with the priest. In the end, perform homam as mentioned above. This is called "Samput path" and has to be done in one go, not spreading over 9 days.

A normal recital of 700 verses takes about 2-3 hours. The special wish-fulfilment style recital takes about 6-7 hours.

5 - There is another style of doing it along with homam. That is, you perform the homam, invoking all the gods, install them and offering them worship. Then you invoke the Goddess, install her and offer her worship. After this, you recite each verse and offer ahuti in the fire at the end of each verse.

See the havan manual link below my signature line. Chandi Homam there gives this method.

In all recitals, the preceding and the following sections to the 13 chapters are to be recited, along with their rituals. Durga Saptashati is never recited without these sections and their rituals.

Devi Suktam from Rig Veda is always recited at the end of the 13th chapter. The Saptashati recital is incomplete without Rig Vedic Devi Suktam.

Before beginning the Saptashati recital, the priest has to recite the Durga Bija Mantra 108, 1008, 10,008 or 10.25 Lakh times as required by the person getting the recital done. Normally, 108 chants are enough. In case of a crisis, more chants are done.

The priest has to be well-versed in Sanskrit and his Sanskrit pronunciation has to be accurate. He has to be familiar with the rituals involved in Saptashati recital.

Mistakes in Saptashati recital can cause harm rather than good.

Because of this, people are advised to engage a priest, rather than doing it themselves.

Always, the Sanskrit recital should be done, not in Hindi or in other languages.

The priest observes a fast on the day of the recital. The person getting the recital done may observe fast, or may eat vegetarian food after the Puja is over.

Normally, the priests charge different amounts of money for different styles of recital. According to your means, you can get any style of recital done. Normally, you should offer clothes and meal to the priest after each recital.

If you talk to the priests, they can tell you more methods of reciting the Saptashati.

You can do it in a temple.

Lastly I would like to thank Saindhaviji for coming to my rescue again.

    regards,
    V.
